ANGORA RANCH
Movie Review by David Alexander Nahmod
Bay Area Reporter
Gay owned Water Bearer Films continues its tradition of offering little-known, low budget gay indies that deserve to find an audience.
Paul Bright’s simple, sweet Angora Ranch chronicles the love at first sight that develops when 20ish Justin (Thomas Romano) and 40ish Jack (Bright) meet after a car accident finds Justin stranded at Jack’s isolated farmhouse.
Both men share a problem: their fathers. Justin’s dad (Kyle Evans) is an unsupportive, homophobic closet case. Jack’s father (producer Tim Jones) is a well-meaning medller, determined to bring the two together.
Shot at the Austin, Texas home that real life lovers Bright and Jones shared until Jones’ recent passing, Angora Ranch is a fine example of what can be accomplished with little money but a lot of heart. The cast, mainly locals making their acting debuts, sometimes falter in their line delivery. But the witty, well-written script tells a sweet story about two likable people who find each other unexpectedly. And you’ll adore Jack’s two gay bunny rabbits, who have a story of their own.
